It is said that, while fleeing the Arab invasion in Spain, the Bishop of Tarragona Prosperus found shelter in this exact bay. He then decided to build a church where to preserve the relic of the martyr Saint Fruttuoso. The Byzantine dome topping the octagonal tower, marking the spot where a perpetual spring flows, should be dated to the 10th century.
