Il Castello Doria a Vernazza<\/strong> \u00e8 stato un edificio difensivo situato sul costone roccioso a sud del paese\u00a0e la sua forma \u00e8 completamente irregolare proprio perch\u00e9 segue il perimetro del costone stesso. Il Castello di Vernazza \u00e8 oggi uno dei punti pi\u00f9 panoramici del borgo.<\/p>\n

Salire le ripide e strette scale che portano alla sommit\u00e0 per ammirare Vernazza dal Castello Doria \u00e8 uno sforzo ripagato da\u00a0un\u00a0panorama a dir poco mozzafiato: da un lato il mare e la pittoresca scogliera e dall\u2019altro Vernazza, come incastonata tra vigne e blu.<\/p>\n

Il primo nucleo, costituito dalla torre, risale alla dominazione degli Obertenghi nell\u2019XI secolo. Nel XII secolo il borgo pass\u00f2 poi di propriet\u00e0 in propriet\u00e0, dai vescovi di Luni, ai Da Passano e quindi ai Fieschi. Nel 1276 per mettere fine ad una guerra tra questi ultimi, i Pisani e la Repubblica di Genova venne stipulato un accordo di pace in Vaticano e paese e castello passarono alla Repubblica.\u00a0Durante le fasi cruciali della seconda guerra mondiale fu inoltre adibito a postazione contraerea dai soldati della Germania nazista.<\/p>\n

Secondo un documento risalente al 1470 e ad una mappa del XVIII secolo\u00a0all\u2019interno del castello vi era una cappella dedicata a San Giovanni Battista\u00a0della quale per\u00f2, oggi, si sono completamente perse le tracce. \u00a0Al suo interno era inoltre conservato un cannone in bronzo riportante la scritta Comunitas Vernati\u00e6<\/em> prelevato dai soldati inglesi\u00a0e ancora oggi visibile nelle sale del British Museum di Londra.<\/p>\n

I pirati a Vernazza<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sotto il castello si trova un bastione quadrangolare che si erge sopra gli scogli all\u2019imboccatura del porticciolo. Di difficile datazione storica, si tende a farlo risalire ai tempi del consolidamento del dominio genovese, quando Vernazza era spesso attaccata dai pirati:\u00a0musulmani provenienti dall\u2019Andalusia o banditi baschi che si erano stanziati a Frassineto, una localit\u00e0 nel sud della Francia.<\/p>\n

Col passare dei secoli le incursioni piratesche aumentarono e i nuovi vascelli arrivavano soprattutto da Costantinopoli. Il pi\u00f9 famoso di loro era il pirata Dragut<\/em>, un comandante ottomano che si distinse come tra i pi\u00f9 bellicosi. Nel 1540\u00a0venne catturato\u00a0in seguito a una sconfitta infertagli dalla flotta di Giannettino Doria e fin\u00ec nelle mani di Andrea Doria\u00a0che\u00a0lo liber\u00f2 in cambio della concessione dell\u2019isola di Tabarca. Tornato in Turchia riorganizza una flotta per attaccare\u00a0Laigueglia e Rapallo. Mor\u00ec poco dopo durante l\u2019assedio di Malta.<\/p>\n

Il Castello Doria a Vernazza \u00e8 oggi custodito dai volontari della Pubblica Assistenza, che ne garantiscono pulizia e accoglienza.<\/p>\n

Il Castello e la torre sono visibili tutti i giorni dalle 9:00 alle 19:00 e il biglietto d\u2019ingresso costa 2\u20ac.<\/p>\n

The Doria Castle in Vernazza<\/strong> was a defensive building located on a rocky spur to the south of the village\u00a0and its shape is completely irregular precisely because it follows the perimeter of the same ridge. The Vernazza Castle is now one of the most scenic spots of the village.<\/p>\n

Climbing the steep and narrow stairs to the top to admire the Doria Castle is one effort paid off by breathtaking panoramic views: on one side the sea and the picturesque cliff and on the other Vernazza, as set among vineyards and the blue.<\/p>\n

The first group, consisting of the tower dates back to the domination of the Obertenghi in the eleventh century. In the twelfth century the village passed from\u00a0the bishops of Luni to the Da Passano family and then to the Fieschi\u00a0and in\u00a01276, to put an end to a war between them, the Pisans and the Republic of Genoa signed a peace agreement in the Vatican and the village and castle passed to the Republic. During the crucial stages of the Second World War it was also used as anti-aircraft position by the German Nazi soldiers.<\/p>\n

According to a document dating from 1470 and a map of the eighteenth century inside the castle there was a chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist which, however, is today\u00a0completely untraceable. There\u00a0was also a bronze cannon bearing the inscription Comunitas Vernati\u00e6<\/em> taken by British soldiers, and still visible in the halls of the British Museum in London.<\/p>\n

Pirates in Vernazza<\/strong><\/p>\n

Below the castle there is a quadrangular bastion that rises above the rocks at the mouth of the harbor. The exact\u00a0historical dating is quite difficult, but we tend to date it back to the time of the consolidation of the Genoese dominion, when Vernazza was often attacked by pirates: Muslims coming from Andalusia or the Basque bandits who had settled in Frassineto, a town in southern France.<\/p>\n

Over the centuries raids by pirates increased and new ships came\u00a0mainly from Constantinople. The most famous of them was the pirate Dragut<\/em>, an Ottoman commander who distinguished himself as one of the most warlike. In 1540 he was captured by the\u00a0Doria fleet and ended up in the hands of Andrea Doria who released him in exchange\u00a0of\u00a0the granting of the island Tabarca. Returned to Turkey\u00a0he put a new fleet together and\u00a0attacked Laigueglia and Rapallo, plundering and ravaging the city. He died during the siege of Malta.<\/p>\n

Visiting the Doria Castle in Vernazza<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Doria Castle\u00a0is now guarded by the volunteers of the Public Assistance, which ensure cleanliness and hospitality.<\/p>\n

The Castle and the tower can be visited\u00a0every day from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the ticket costs 2 \u20ac.<\/p>\n
