E\u2019 la pi\u00f9 grande basilica gotica della citt\u00e0. Fu costruita in stile gotico provenzale e tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo venne ampiamente ristrutturata in forme barocche da Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale un bombardamento degli Alleati del 4 agosto 1943 provoc\u00f2 un incendio durato quasi due giorni che distrusse quasi interamente la chiesa. Nell\u2019ottobre 1944 iniziarono i lavori di ricostruzione della Basilica. It is marked by a belfry that stands within the grounds at the northeast corner. The complex retains the citadel-like walls setting it apart from the outside world, walls that contained a vast religious community\u2014and today contain a more modest one\u2014 made up of the Convent of the Poor Clares and an order Grey Friars. The complex was expanded along Baroque lines in the 18th century. It was almost entirely destroyed by bombing in WW II and was restored to its original Gothic form in 1953.
