Inaugurato nel 1825, era originariamente destinato a rifornire la citt\u00e0 di acqua potabile, ma col sorgere sulle sue rive di vetrerie, mulini ed altri insediamenti industriali, si decise di destinarlo alla navigazione commerciale.<\/p>\n
Alla fine del XIX sec., in seguito alla riorganizzazione urbanistica ad opera di Hausmann, il canale venne fatto passare in galleria. This is the place where Am\u00e9lie, the main character of the film \u201cThe Fabulous Destiny of \u00a0Am\u00e9lie Poulain\u201d<\/strong> (2001 romantic comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Audrey Tatou and Mathieu Kassovitz) goes skipping stones. The construction of the canal was ordered by Napoleon I in 1802, in order to create an artificial waterway for supplying Paris with fresh water. <\/em><\/p>\n Later, with the emerging on its banks of glassmakers, mills and other industrial settlements, it started to be used for shipping. <\/em><\/p>\n At the end of the 19th<\/sup> century, after Hausmann\u2019s renovation, the canal was covered.
