Fortezza voluta da Carlo V (1367), fu trasformata in prigione di Stato dal Cardinale Richelieu; una sorta di luogo di detenzione a 5 stelle per nobili, intellettuali e membri dell\u2019alta borghesia (Montaigne, il Marchese de Sade e Voltaire sono solo alcuni dei detenuti pi\u00f9 conosciuti), avvolta in un misto di mistero e cattiva reputazione per via delle torture che pare vi si praticassero e ad un culto del segreto che contribu\u00ec a creare miti come quello dell\u2019Uomo dalla Maschera di Ferro.<\/p>\n

This fortress built in 1367 to defend the city of Paris from the English threat in the Hundred Years\u2019 War was used through the centuries as a prison for upper-class members of French society; Montaigne, the Marquis de Sade and Voltaire were among the prisoners. <\/em><\/p>\n Extensive use of the prison was made by Louis XIV, who personally decided who should be imprisoned.
