The Pico Castle is a castle located in the historic center of Mirandola, in the province of Modena.

Stronghold famous in Europe as legendarily impregnable [1], it belonged to the Pico family, who ruled over Mirandola for four centuries (1311-1711) and who enriched it during the Renaissance with important works of art.

The castle, which dominates the long square of the constituent and the tree-lined avenues of the Circonvallazione (built in place of the ancient walls, demolished during the nineteenth century), was restored in 2006 after many years of neglect, but was then seriously damaged by the earthquake Emilia in 2012, which made it unusable again.

The Pico castle, together with the town hall, is an icon and a symbol of the city of Mirandola.

Mirandola originated as a Renaissance city-fortress. For four centuries it was the seat of an independent principality (first a county, then a duchy), a possession of the Pico family, whose most outstanding member was the polymath Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463–94). It was besieged two times: in 1510 and 1551. It was acquired by the Duchy of Modena in 1710. The city started to decay after the castle was destroyed in 1714. From the period you can visit the Cathedral, the Town Hall, the Oratory of the Blessed Sacrament, the Church of San Francesco, the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of the Door, the Church of Jesus, with the adjoining Jesuit college, today the seat of the Library, as well as the ancient castle that became the seat of the Civic Museum. The museum space brings together many pictorial testimonies from the collections of the Pico family, from the families of the ducal court and from the churches of the ancient capital. On 29 May 2012, a powerful earthquake hit the Mirandola area. It killed at least 17 people and injured 200, it collapsed churches and factories, the castle and several historic buildings have suffered serious structural damage. The renovation is currently underway. The 5.8 magnitude quake left 14,000 people homeless.

[13
["http://www.mirandola.eu/
