Crossed by SR 68, on the bank of the Cecina River near the confluence with the Trossa stream, it is a typical example of an industrial village created around the exploitation of the rock salt deposits by the Belgian company Solvay. The name comes from the bridge that Count Carlo Ginori built between 1831 and 1835 over the river Cecina. Its identification with the Agellum cited in 754 as one of the founding properties of the Abbey of Monteverdi is doubtful, but it is certain that Gello was assigned in 1186 by Emperor Henry VI to the Bishop of Volterra. In 1288 it was entirely subdued to the Municipality of Volterra and conquered after a long siege by the Pisans in 1363. In 1436 it seems that there was an abbey on the site. Occupied and devastated in 1447 by the Aragonese troops, it passed under the dominion of Florence in 1472, becoming part of the Vicariate of the Val di Cecina. Conquered by the Sienese in 1479, Gello was sacked and has not been used since. Today its restored houses offer tourist accommodation. Already the Etruscans extracted the mineral to forge tools and furnishings. The mining activity was the most important in Europe during the 19th century. It was here that the Montecatini company, one of Europe’s largest companies, was born and took its name, later merging with Montedison. Its history is documented in the Mining Museum, which – with the industrial archaeology park and the mining village – offers visitors of all ages the opportunity for a fascinating journey into the bowels of the earth among shafts and galleries, to learn about mining technologies and the stories of the miners. Excavation was divided into ten levels of galleries joined by a number of shafts, the most important of which were the Alfredo and Rostand shafts. The height above sea level ranged from 477 m. (entrance to the mine) to 193 m. (lowest level). A long drainage tunnel (over 1,300 m.) carried the water to Macinaia. A maximum of 350 workers worked in all the mining activities. In 80 years, about 50,000 tonnes of copper metal were extracted.

In summer, the mine becomes an attractive venue for shows and concerts.
