{"type":"Feature","properties":{"id":1073,"name":"Nossa Senhora das Neves fortress","description":"<p>Nossa Senhora das Neves fortress<br \/>\nAfter the restoration of independence (1640) and due to the need of protecting the Portuguese shores from Spanish and corsair\u2019s attacks, a series of fortresses were built, by the sea. In Le\u00e7a da Palmeira the Nossa Senhora das Neves Fortress was built. Together with the ones in S. Jo\u00e3o da Foz and S. Francisco Xavier (Castelo do Queijo) it made the defence line of Oporto.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a bulwark fortress, with a four tip star plan, protected by steep walls and jutting sentry-boxes. They started building it in 1651, replacing another older and smaller fortress nearby (that had been built in 1638).<br \/>\nWhen it lost its military function, it became the headquarters for the Oporto Customs House. In 1899, it became the secretary of the Leix\u00f5es Port.
